Finding Your Way Back to Exercise

Getting back into exercise can feel harder than actually exercising.

Maybe you used to be active and life got busy. Maybe you took a long break, lost your motivation, or simply stopped enjoying your routine. Whatever the reason, you don’t have to jump straight back into intense workouts.

The best way back is to start small and find movement that you genuinely enjoy.

How Much Exercise Do You Actually Need?

A good goal is around 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week, alongside at least two days of strength training.

That might sound like a lot, especially when your week is already packed. But you don’t have to do it all at once.

Think brisk walking, cycling, swimming, dancing, jogging, or anything else that gets your body moving.

You can also break your activity into smaller sessions throughout the day. A 10-minute walk here, a quick work out there: it all adds up.

And honestly, choosing something you enjoy makes staying consistent so much easier.

Start Where You Are

If you’ve been inactive for a while, don’t try to make up for lost time in your first week.

Start slowly and give your body time to adjust.

Maybe your first week is three short walks. The next week, you add a longer walk or a beginner’s workout. Then you gradually increase the time or intensity as you become fitter.

There’s no prize for doing the hardest workout on day one.

Before exercising, take a few minutes to warm up by starting at a lower intensity. Afterwards, slow things down and give your body time to cool down.

Make Movement Part of Your Life

Exercise doesn’t always have to look like a traditional workout.

Walk instead of driving when you can. Take the stairs. Cycle to work. Get off the bus a few stops early and walk the rest of the way.

You can even make movement more social: go for a walk with a friend, take a dance class, try yoga, play a sport, or explore something completely new.

The more variety you have, the less exercise feels like another chore on your to-do list.

Find What Keeps You Coming Back

The perfect workout is not necessarily the one that burns the most calories.

It’s the one you actually want to do again.

Try different things until you find your favorites. Maybe that’s Pilates. Maybe it’s swimming. Maybe it’s strength training, dancing, cycling, or simply going for long walks while listening to your favorite playlist.

Your routine doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s.

And When You Fall Off Track?

You probably will.

That’s normal.

A busy week, travel, work, family, low motivation — life happens. Missing a few workouts doesn’t mean you’ve failed or have to start all over again.

Just get back to it when you can.

Think about movement as something you build into your lifestyle, not a temporary challenge you have to complete perfectly.

Set small, realistic goals. Celebrate your progress. Keep experimenting. And most importantly, don’t make exercise something you have to punish yourself into doing.

Find movement that makes you feel good enough to keep coming back.

Because getting back to exercise isn’t about going from zero to 100. It’s simply about taking the next step.
